I just finished reading a very interesting book called “The Birth Order Book – Why you are the way you are” by Dr. Kevin Leman. Dr. Leman is a psychologist, humorist, and New York Times bestselling author. “The Birth Order Book” takes a look at how a person’s birth order affects their personality and how they deal with life. He discusses how your birth order affects who you are, the relationships you choose, and even sheds some light on your career path. The most important aspect in this book, in my opinion, is how you can apply these ideas to your children to help you ensure that they grow up to be well balanced. Some of the behavior problems can be easier to manage if you understand the motivations of the child.
According to Dr. Leman, there are three birth orders: firstborn, middleborn, and lastborn. Each develops under the influence of the next oldest child, and in the case of the firstborn, the parents. While the younger children do have influence over the others development, it is the older children that have the largest impact. As I am reading this book, it is like Dr. Leman is talking about me when describing firstborn children. While I was actually the second of two children, I was the first born son. I took on many of the first born characteristics. Laura is the middle of five children and when Dr. Leman was describing middleborns, it was like he knew Laura. Now that I have a better understanding to why Laura does some of the things that she does, I think our relationship will be strengthened.
Not only does “The Birth Order Book” describe the characteristics of each birth order, it also goes into parenting tips for dealing with each. According to Dr. Leman, many child behavior problems come about because they feel misunderstood. Parents can do themselves a favor by reading this book. I know that I can use the ideas and concepts in this book to help make me a better parent to Mason.
“The Birth Order Book” also talks about how to manage the different birth order characteristics in the business world. If you are trying to sell to a firstborn, bring your facts and figures so they can make a logical decision. The lastborn will be more impulsive and be willing to take more risk. This can give you an advantage over your competition.
This is a very insightful book that will teach you about yourself, your partner, and your children. I would recommend “The Birth Order Book” to anyone that is looking to get better insight into their family.
